4.7

It’s true that sim-racing has come a long way since its beginnings, and the same is true of simus, which have become increasingly realistic. Today, you can have your own sim-racing setup in your living room, bedroom or gaming den. And I’m not talking about the pro drivers, who have even more advanced setups with active chassis and jacks to transcribe what the car does.

Of course, there are many players in the world of sim-racing, just as there are in motor sports. Among these players, there’s one Swiss manufacturer who has set itself apart from the competition by offering products that are both finished, of high quality and provide good sensations. I’m talking, of course, about Logitech, with its range of G steering wheels.

Visit G29 and G920 have long dominated sales of sim-racing wheels for the simple reason that these products tick many of the boxes sim-racers are looking for. In life, it’s impossible to have a product that does everything perfectly, because compromises have to be made.

Given the weight of the years of the G29 and G920, Logitech has recently released a new steering wheel to better face the competition, the G923. In what follows, I’m going to introduce you to this steering wheel, tell you about its strengths and weaknesses, and give you my opinion on it.

Main and technical features of the steering wheel

  • 900° rotation angle
  • Non-linear brake pedal
  • Compatible with Playstation, Xbox and PC
  • USB connection to platforms
  • 28 cm diameter wheel
  • TrueForce technology for enhanced immersion
  • Force feedback with 2 brush motors

Logitech G923 design

As the saying goes, “you don’t change a winning team”, and Logitech has taken this expression to heart. Instead of starting with a blank sheet of paper for the G923‘s design, Logitech preferred to play it safe by adopting the overall design of the G29/920. Personally, I think this is a good thing, because both the G29 and G920 steering wheels have a truly successful design, both minimalist and uncluttered.

The G923 takes up the stylistic code of its big brothers, while adding a few changes here and there. Gone are the differences between the G29 and G920. The G923 is identical for Xbox and Playstation, with differences only in the buttons.

The wheel is very sober, using metal and leather, with a blue band at the top. On this point, I’d have preferred a color that went better with the black of the wheel. But hey, it’s still beautiful. As for the base, it’s identical to the steering wheels that the G923 replaces. And it’s the same story for the crankset, with only a slight redesign of the peripheral. Once again, it’s still beautiful overall.

Customized assembly

As with the wheels it replaces, the G923 has two hooks on the underside that allow it to be mounted securely on a table or desk. I can assure you that, once in place, this steering wheel won’t budge a muscle, even if you’re going full bore on your errands.

For cockpits, fastening points are provided underneath, using M6 screws to mount the G923 and its crankset, to virtually every chassis available on the market. Logitech is a major player in the sim-racing peripherals industry, so it’s only natural that its latest steering wheel should be supported by cockpit manufacturers.

Manufacturing and finishing

The G923 uses metal and leather for the wheel, plastic for the chainstay, and plastic and metal for the crankset. All in all, the materials are pretty well finished, especially the metal. The structure of the wheel is brushed, giving the most beautiful effect for lovers of quality products.

The leather used is perforated and well-made, giving the G923 a premium look. It’s truly beautiful and very well finished, especially the stitching. As for the plastic base, this too is very well made and doesn’t look cheap. As with Logitech‘s other steering wheels, the G923 ‘s finish is excellent, worthy of brands far more premium than the Swiss manufacturer. I only noticed a color difference between the two parts of the base, but this doesn’t change the quality of the workmanship.

The same goes for the pedals. Plastic and metal combine very well, and the device is very solid. Which is only to be expected, given that this little gem weighs in at over 3 kilos on the scales.

Handling the steering wheel

Given that the G923 is based on steering wheels with an excellent grip, I’m not surprised that it hasn’t really changed. It’s on a par with the steering wheels from Fanatecand mid-range wheels. The wheel has a slight flat bottom, but its diameter is rather small for my taste (28 cm), and that’s a bit of a handicap, especially if you want to drive Forza Horizon at your leisure. But the 900° angle of rotation makes up for it on the G923.

As for the ergonomics of the steering wheel, I find them perfect. Virtually all buttons are easily accessible, without your hands leaving their position, and I love that. The size of the wheel helps a lot, especially the leather around it, which provides an excellent level of grip. By the way, I didn’t wear gloves when I was doing my sim-racing sessions, and I didn’t feel the need at all.

Another good point is the paddles. They’re metal and rather large, but above all they’re very close to the wheel. They click superbly, but lack responsiveness for my taste. It’s like driving a Golf R in manual mode, and the gearbox takes a fraction of a second longer to shift. Not a penalty in absolute terms, but a little annoying.

Sensations during play

Let’s get down to business: how does the G923 feel? Simply put, it’s pretty good, as long as you don’t activate TrueForce. Given that the G29, G920 and G923 share the same base, in-game sensations from Logitech ‘s latest arrival are virtually identical to those it replaces. Force feedback is both precise and powerful, reproducing everything the car does in sim-racing. The 2 motors are capable of plunging you deep into all the simus available on the market, even if the technology is rather old.

Now back to TrueForce. On paper, it’s supposed to be a technology that recovers data from the game’s graphics engines in order to better regulate force feedback through vibrations, and thus achieve greater realism. In theory, it’s great, but only when it works.

On virtually all the titles I tried, TrueForce blurred the sensations, making it almost impossible to understand what the car was doing, so much so that the steering wheel vibrated in all directions. I didn’t appreciate this technology at all, and immediately deactivated this function, as it’s not up to scratch as far as I’m concerned.

As for the G923 crankset, I think it’s excellent for the price of the bundle. Compared to the flywheels it replaces, it hasn’t evolved that much, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As far as I’m concerned, the springs on this crankset are more than enough for a good dose of feel.

Logitech G923 compatibility

The Logitech G923 is a steering wheel compatible with Playstation, Xbox and PC, provided you have the right version. The difference now lies in the buttons, and that’s a good thing.

As far as cockpits are concerned, this steering wheel is supported by virtually every chassis on the market, and that’s a good thing. In fact, if you’re interested, I’ve already written a few articles on different cockpits, which you can find right here.

Value for money

The basic price of this steering wheel is €429 on the Logitech website, but you can find it for around 285 on Amazon. At this price, it’s an excellent bundle, with superb value for money, especially for the sensations it provides.

My verdict on Logitech’s G923

I can’t recommend the Logitech G923 enough, whether you’re a sim-racing beginner, enthusiast or pro. It’s a complete bundle, capable of offering total immersion in most simus. Just remember to try out TrueForce before disabling it, in case you like the technology.
